Instagram Stories: New Feature That Makes Instagram More Similar to Snapchat
Instagram or Snapchat? That is the question! Well, apparently we don’t have to choose anymore.Instagram Storiesis a brand new feature released by the notorious social media platform that makes it way more similar to Snapchat, and the Internet has already split into two factions.
Whenever it comes to changing and/or adding a social media feature, those who use it inevitably start the eternal debate whether the added (or removed) feature is something useful and practical or not. This time around, however, things are a bit different. Until now, in fact, whenever a social media has revamped its style, it has never changed its main purpose. If Twitter is usually used for gossiping and politics and Facebook for checking up on that old high school friend, Instagram and Snapchat tell little stories and show pictures and videos accordingly.
Available starting from today, and already dubbed as Snapchat-like or Snapchat-clone (although its official name is ‘Instagram Stories’), Instagram’s new feature ultimately blurs the lines between the two apps, probably turning the tide of Snapchat forever.
‘Instagram Stories’ lets anyone create an ephemeral slideshow of Boomerang loops, photos and/or videos that only last for 24 hours (sounds something similar, huh?) and are impossible to like or comment on (comments regarding the Story should be sent as a form of direct message). As things weren’t already Snapchat-like enough, Instagram added a sort of Snapchat-inspired drawing and texting option, which allows us to write or draw funny things on our little stories.
Designed to let people know what’s happening behind-the-scenes whether you are a ‘globe trotter’, ‘life lover’ or a ‘beauty guru’, ‘Instagram Stories’ is already one of the social media’s most utilized features, yet one of the most criticized at the same time.
Aside from the whole obvious ‘Snapchat look-alike’ problem, this feature could change our beloved social media drastically, both in terms of its main purpose and graphics. As for the latter, your Instagram app, if updated, has already changed the feed’s layout.
Each feed presents a row of circular avatars at the top, which in return represent all of those Instagram accounts you follow that have just released a Story, which means that just by tapping on them you’ll be able to spend a good amount of time addictively watching as many Instagram Stories as you can. As soon as a story is over, Instagram automatically rotates to the next one with a nice cube effect. Unlike Snapchat, however, you won’t be able to tap on the left side of the screen to rewind the post.
As for the content, what should we all expect? All things considered, Instagram let many talented photography-enthusiasts become professional photographers (not to mention the fact that many fashion-enthusiasts managed to create a business out of their passion thanks to it), and whenever we open the app, all we look for is a nice picture to double tap.
As for tutorials, Instagram already has the ‘video’ option released, although it is rarely used by it-girls such as Kylie, who prefers Snapchat to Instagram when it comes to showing off her makeup routine.
Are things ultimately going to change, now? Is it the end of Snapchat, or is it going to last up until Instagram adds equally catching filters? We guess only time will tell. In the meanwhile, you can always tap the “+” icon at the top of your screen and try out the new feature!
