The Only Five Products You Need to Fight Frizzy Hair
Graphic Design by Candace Napier
There’s no greater foe to a smooth blow-out (i.e. the perfect hair day) than frizz. While fighting it can seem impossible, you can prevent it from happening in the first place simply by owning the right tools. We checked in with singularly named stylist Kenna of Kennaland Salon for a checklist of exactly what you’ll need to keep fly-aways from forming, and curated our own favorite buys for you to stockpile.
Smoothing Shampoo and Conditioner
The first step in fighting fly-aways begins in the shower. Kenna recommends a calming, smoothing shampoo and conditioner, as it adds intense moisture to your hair while still removing dirt, excess oils and impurities. In the end, Kenna says your hair will be softer and easier to deal with.
Our pick:L’Oreal Paris EverSleek Sulfate-Free Shampoo and Conditioner ( each). This set includes sunflower seed oil, known for its hydrating properties, to leave hair smooth.
De-frizz Spray or Serum
This is the stuff you turn to after you shower and before you blow-dry. But take note, when it comes to styling products, Kenna (who swears by Evo End Doctor Cream) says to avoid heat-activated formulas as they can actuallycausefrizz.
Our pick:R + Co Foil Frizz + Static Control Spray (). When your hair is damp, spritz in this product to smooth hair. It also includes a heat protectant, so you have a shield from the frizz-causing damage of heat tools.
It may not have “frizz” in the name, but Kenna recommends adding a strengthening cream to your lineup. Given strong hair is less likely to break off and frizz, it makes a lot of sense.
Our pick:John Masters Organics Honey and Hibiscus Hair Reconstructor () has hyaluronic acid and amino acids to moisturize and help repair any hair that’s already damaged.
It’s exactly what it sounds like: These hair tools have oil built into the product to help detangle and nourish hair. “Any oil-based products will sit on top of the hair shaft, weighing down the hair, which helps for a quick fix,” notes Kenna.
Our pick:Macadamia Natural Oil Healing Oil Infused Comb (). If you’re a fan of the brand’s treatment oil, you’ll be pleased to know it’s the same one that’s infused into this wide-tooth comb.

This will be a big purchase, but one that lasts for a very long time. “When hair is wet, the cuticles that retain moisture are open,” notes Kenna. “When blow-drying your hair with a blow dryer, you are forcing the hair cuticles to close, locking moisture into the shaft, which helps reducefrizz.”
Our pick:Chi Touch 2 Touch Screen Dryer (0).This touchscreen dryer from Chi, which can be converted to a hands-free device, lets you customize the temperature and speed of the drying process.
At the end of the day, reach for products and formulas that hydrate and smooth the hair cuticle. The stronger, healthier, and more obedient your hair is, the less likely you’ll deal with frizz and fly-aways.
